Juicy Zins For Your Juicy Summer BBQ

Juicy Zins For Your Juicy Summer BBQ

It’s Memorial Day Weekend, and that means summer is officially here! It’s time to throw on some shades, break out the BBQ & start grilling up a delicious myriad of marinated meats (and veggies, of course)! But what wine should you serve with your great variety of grilled goods? We have two wonderful bottles of zin that will pair perfectly with any type of BBQ: Smockshop Band Zinfandel 2018 and Precedent Zinfandel 2017.

The Juicy Zins

Lovely and lively, these zinfandels are filled with flavor and nuance. They are NOT your typical big, fleshy overripe and over-alcoholic zins. The power is there, but there is also subtlety and elegance. These wines can be paired with grilled veggies, including portabella mushrooms, eggplant, zucchini, as well as grilled meats such as chicken, lamb and steak. These are superb wines well-deserving of Zinfandel’s forgotten moniker “California Claret.”

Smockshop Band “Spring Ephemeral”, Hiyu Farms, Zinfandel 2018

Based in the beautiful Hood River Valley of Oregon, Hiyu Farms values cultivating organic biodiversity in their vineyards. Their Smockshop Band project explores the diverse landscapes of the Columbia Gorge by leasing land & buying fruit from local landowners and growers who share Hiyu’s vision. Their zinfandel is grown on the banks of the Columbia River where the Gorge transitions to desert. This area has an assorted mix of vegetation & terrain, which lends the wine compelling complex mineral qualities and botanical perfumes.

Precedent, Kirschenmann Vineyard, Zinfandel 2017

The Kirschenmann Vineyard rests in a sandy, chalk and silica-rich oxbow of the Mokelumne River and is recognized as one of Lodi’s great old vine Zinfandel vineyards. Planted in 1915 on its own roots, this organically farmed vineyard has fast become one of Lodi’s most prized sites under the stewardship of good friend Tegan Passalaqua. Interplanted with Carignan and Mondeuse this is simply one of the most thoughtfully farmed vineyards in California.

The wines are allowed to ferment and age naturally with only a small addition of sulfur post MLF. They are aged in a 1000L Slavonian oak fuder and older French barriques, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

‘Kirschemann’ Zinfandel is supremely perfumed with florals and savory notes. There is
a sense of class and elegance in the structure of this wine that transcends what we
thought we knew about Lodi Zinfandel.
